Seriously go to the wreck versus the main restaurant. Staff was great. No really we had been on a LONG wait and they stepped up. Food was delish. Seafood was amazing. Come for the atmosphere stay for the craft beer..

The wreck of Salty Dog lived up to it's name, as in a wreck of an experience. We originally were going to eat at the Salty Dog, but they told us we could come here since there was no wait and it was the same menu. It was just after 3:30 and not busy at all, it took 15-20 mins for a server to get our drink orders. We had to go up front to even get a server and they were surprised no one had come over yet. It took a little over an hour after we sat down when our food finally arrived. When it arrived, two of the sandwiches were only halved and not whole. After we finished the server did offer an apology (he was probably new) but it was not a memorable experience. Real quick, food was overall good. The fish Po Boy I had was solid but expensive for such a simple sandwich. I ordered a side of hush puppies which were some of the blandest and most underwhelming I've had, and I'm a huge fan of hush puppies.

This is one of my yearly favorite spots for fresh seafood! The oysters on a half shell are amazing to start the evening. The She-Crab soup is the best I've had and have ordered it every year I visit since they opened. I love that the staff is from all over the world... Their name tags have their name and their native country which is a great conversation starter too!! They serve Salty Dog Cafe draft beer and it compares to the Foothills Carolina Blonde! My favorite entree would have to be the swordfish with steamed vegetables! It's fresh, always cooked to perfection and a very large portion. I have been to Hilton Head for 30 years every year and this is a must every time! You can enjoy meals indoors and outdoors while overlooking the water. They even have swordfish on the kids menu instead of generic fish sticks! It is a little pricey, but the quality and experience makes it worth it!

We sat outside with no wait and enjoyed our time. It's a typical fried fish emporium but we wanted the vibe of "the Salty Dog" without waiting 1 hour. The views were great. We had the fish tacos (a special) and they were good. The service was prompt and overall a good experience.

This place is appropriately named. Wow, not a good experience. 45 min after we ordered our food, it finally came. Many other tables ordered after us & got food first. I ordered no onions on my burger, it came with onions. I ordered chips, they brought fries. They said the burger would be medium, it was burnt. The view was nice and they did not charge for the burger since it was messed up.

Touristy, but the food was pretty decent. When they made a mistake, the service made up and fixed the issue without even asking. Worth a try if you are visiting and want to check out the area. Great location.

I have been numerous times. Overall: alright. The decor is amazing! The piano music is fabulous. The hush puppies are out of this world! The blackened fresh catch is always outstanding. The service is usually just okay. Either the server and/or the kitchen typically screws up at least one dish, e.g. 3 out of 12 dishes on our latest visit of 13 people. Everything is pricey, including the kids' menu. The frozen cocktails, e.g. daiquiri, pina colada, are made with bottled mix, not fresh fruit, and therefore not worth the $7 price tag. The calamari is rubbery, obviously not fresh, and served with what tastes like ranch from a bottle. I will be back for happy hour drinks and hush puppies but almost certainly nothing else.

Just a few steps beyond the Salty Dog (and the Tavern) with a shorter wait. 2 hours plus wait at Salty Dog and 45 minute wait here with the same exact menu. Sooooo worth it. The seafood pot pie sounds gross to me but is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! 5 stars for that. The hush puppies get 3 stars, many will like them but they taste like cake. I prefer my puppies savory and cornbread-ish. 4 stars for the crab dip, 1 star for the rolls, 5 stars for that honey butter that comes with them lol. I didn't have the seafood pasta, but my niece gave it 5 stars. There's an excellent outdoor patio area prior to entering the restaurant where they have activities for the children - GREAT WAY TO PASS 45 MINUTES WITH A TOT. View of the marina is just as beautiful, service is great, prices and menu identical to the namely popular Salty Dog just steps away.

Save yourself the trip. Oysters were dry... you read it correct. Dry! Blackend shrimp is ok but veggies came out cool. If you want good food I recommend you keep looking.

Excellent food! I tried the grilled Swordfish in a bun! Loved this family friendly environment! The friendly staff seemed liked they were from all over the world! one of the staff was from Ukraine, the host was from Turkey, our waitress was from Louisiana etc. perhaps a little pricey but well worth the visist!

We just returned from dinner at this restaurant. We ordered hush puppies which you have to pay for, never received them. When we notified staff they never apologized, still never got them. No we did not pay for them. But hey! Maybe they could have brought them anyways. You have to pay $6 to just get onto that part of the Island. Service was horrible, overpriced and staff was not good. Go to Hudson's Seafood. We ate there a couple of nights before. Excellent service, beautiful views, outdoors, prices great. Local seafood. Waitstaff professional and hush puppies are free and delicious!

After a 2 hour wait at the salty dog we came to the wreck. We had a large group and we're happy to wait for a drink. After sitting for over an hour we asked about our table and the hostess and team were confused beyond belief. Our waiters were so confused and messed up all our orders. I hoped a manager would step in and help, but nothing. They were more concerned with getting out of the place to do whatever was planned than fixing their problems. I would never recommend this as an option for any group or small group. Waste of time and ruined the evening.

Before I begin, we live in Charleston and know good food. As a tourist to Hilton Head, don't fall for the "No wait at Wreck". If you want to eat at the salty dog, they will have a wait and they will push you to the wreck. We had a hush puppy app. Hush puppies should be made with cornmeal and have tartar sauce on the side. These were like doughnut dough with butter on the side. People of Ohio- these are NOT hush puppies! Next my son had a cup of shecrab soup. This is not supposed to be watery like a broth. Great shecrab soup, like served in Chas, is thick and rich. They should stop serving this garbage. The fried shrimp is imported shrimp pumped with tripoloyphosphate (bad chemical) and ridiculously overpriced. My wife had the crab dip app which, honestly, they should fire the chef over. It tasted like it was an afterthought. The worst crab dip we have ever tasted. My daughter had pasta and surprisingly it was good. I realize wait staff can trash a restaurant and this dude needs to go. Alex is awful. NEVER filled tea or water. Had to ask for refill as we asked for check. We would have said something to manager but never saw one. I take that back, when we were leaving he asked how everything was, perfect timing since we had already paid the check. DO NOT EAT HERE!!! It is a tourist trap. WAY overpriced for garbage food. This place would be closed in a month in Charleston.

Come on posters! You are in Hilton Head and complaining about how touristy Salty Dog is? Get over it. Food is good (not great), service was good and beer is cold. We went at lunch and it was fine. Sure there were some kids but don't they get to eat also?

I went on a Thrusday and I had the low country boil. It was very good. We had a great view of the water from our table.

Food isn't that great for the price they charge. If it wasn't for the view and great service it would have gotten 2 stars.

Fun atmosphere with good service. The jambalaya was awesome and was plenty for slime one to share. Just the right of spice to it. We had a large party and was put in a smaller table so that was a little disappointing.

This place is great and one of a few places we always come back to every year. The atmosphere and view is awesome and the food is really good. Recommend the crab cake sandwich or the fisherman's pasta. The service is always good but this past time was exceptional. We had a group of 14 and our server (Kyle) handled it flawlessly. Take the family there for lunch or dinner.

You come here for the ambiance, not the food. The Wreck of the Salty Dog has the identical menu to the Salty Dog Cafe, and we turned a 2 hour wait into no wait by simply walking across the deck to this overflow restaurant. The prices are a bit high for what you get, but I suppose that comes with the territory. Still, for $25 I expected my Fisherman's Pasta to be something more interesting. It was supposed to have Crab, Lobster and Shrimp tossed with penne pasta. First, and probably to no surprise, the pasta was definitely boxed (I don't expect inhouse fresh made, but at least get fresh-to-frozen over boxed). Then, about 50% or more of the above seafoods were sort of shredded finely... like IN the sauce as opposed to lump pieces. Kind of ruined the experience. Finally, the sauce had a little spice to it. Not something the average joe can't handle, but might be a consideration for a hot day. The portion is massive, easily enough for two people. Would definitely NOT recommend such a heavy, spicy dish in Hilton Head heat. Backing up, we started with hush puppies which weren't bad, but weren't good. They literally tasted like fried corn oil and that's it. Was hoping for a more intense cornbread type taste, but it was a bit bland. Mixed drinks are about $7-$9, and I tried the Pina Colada, which the table agreed was in a smaller-than-average sized glass. So in short, the food is edible though boring and overpriced. The ambiance is OK though, especially if you have a good view of the water.

Worst lunch on the island! Staff was lost, 30 minutes to take our order. The food was late 45 minutes from ordering until food arrived. Orders were wrong, took food away brought new plates still not right. Ate it anyway.

DELICIOUS fisherman's pasta and stuffed Maine lobster. Must haves when you visit the 'dawg'!

  • Jessica S.

The only reason I'm giving this place three stars instead of two is that I knew I was going for a kid friendly place with not great food. The bread they brought to the table was stale and hard, my shrimp were not high quality, and the waitress never came back to refill our beverages. On the plus side they take large parties, it's loud so your kids don't get "looks", and the outdoor face painting and kid dancing area were big hits. So if you go make some memories with your babies and eat a salad ;)

Basically a consolation prize for any guest after seeing a long wait at the nearby Salty Dog Cafe. Menu is surprisingly limited with very little that feels unique. The hush puppies are good but everything else was in the 2-star / 3-star camp. The server I had was top notch, did a great job taking care of my table - food order accurate, drinks delivered quickly, saw us immediately as we sat down, etc.

  • Charlie B.

We had the low country boil special on a Thursday night. The food and service were especially good. We encountered several different staff members and everyone of them were friendly and helpful. There was no wait for an outside table and our food was served in a timely manner. We would definitely return when we visit South Beach again.

Honesty, come on? What a fucking joke..Just like all the rest of the tourist traps here in the beach life. I ate at the Salty Dog Cafe..it was horrible. This is supposedly more of a sit down restaurant.. don't be fooled buy this place..100% junk..we were an 8 top..I understand how hard large tables can be ..b/c I have worked in the restaurant biz. For over ten years. The service was horrible..at first the waitress seemed nice and happy..she was not attentive at all..20 mins for our drink order and she forgot one..we ordered our meals...50min wait. Cold...everything was cold my g/f burger cooked to Medium Rare..the waitress asked 3 times "mid rare right?", it was a cold well done dried turd. The castaway seafood platter..broiled scallops? Microwaved cold covered with parsley... I got the black bean burger..dried pico de gallo..no lettuce no onion..no pickle...no just my plate..everyone was missing toppings for their sandwiches. Bullshit. Then we waited over 45mins for our bill..normally I would have complained. .I was with mixed company..and was told to shut up and relax..I will NEVER eat here again..please do ur self a favor and pick something else..ANYTHING..is better..Arby's? Burger King? Truck Stops? Better choices on this island..don't be a fool.

The food was ok but the service was pretty sad. We had the fried flounder platter with hush puppy appetizer. Hush puppies were not great. Not sure what others saw in it. They did not have the consistency you would expect at all of a hush puppy. The flounder was ok. Fries were cold. Cole slaw was under seasoned. If you call at 3p you can make a res between 4:30 and 5:30. Make a 5:30 res else you will have a long wait. As we were walking out we saw 5 tables open yet they still had a 60 min wait. Not sure if they were short handed but at least one party left as we were walking out because they were annoyed by the wait given how many open tables there were. Server was pretty clueless. It gets three stars because it is what it is. A quick service place somewhat dressed up.

We went to the Wreck because of a 2-plus hour wait at the original Salty Dog. It was entirely worth it considering our experience when we went to the original Salty Dog a couple of days later. We waited for a table by the outside bar. At first it seem the bartender was struggling with the rush of patrons, but we found she was new on the job and when help came from the manager pitching in with the workload, we found her service exceptional and her drinks very well made. We ordered lunch at the bar and were very happy with the shrimp basket and the crab cakes. The hush puppies were dense, but very tasty. (If you get hush puppies with your meal, no sense ordering them as an appetizer. You'll have plenty) We stayed for several rounds of perfectly made bloody mary's and Maitais We returned to the Wreck two days later after a dismal experience at the Salty Dog and again had finely executed cocktails, including the "Dark and Story" which I highly recommend on a hot day. The manager and the bartenders are especially nice and conversational. Highly recommend the Wreck for food and a great place for Happy Hour

Great service, quick and responsive. Fisherman's Pasta had too much pepper, usually it's much better. In-laws had the swordfish special, which was fine. Kids had a great time as usual.

We opted for the Wreck of the Salty Dog instead of the "Salty Dog" because the wait time was less than half at the Wreck. Same menu as the other. The waiter was very good. The kitchen sent out the wrong shrimp for one of our orders and even though we told the waiter it was fine, he went back and brought out the correct food right away. Also - there are a bunch if shops around that you can walk around in while you wait for your table which is much better than the usual "sit on this bench with a bunch of strangers" for an hour staring at your beeper. :-). A little expensive but not more than you would expect in a tourist town for vacationers.

I do not understand how this place has good reviews. We visited the Wreck this August after it was recommended to us by a number of people. We were already in the area for a dolphin cruise and decided to stay for dinner. The pro's were- we were a party of 10 seated right away (at two seperate tables next to each other). it was an outside seat but on the top level, so we didn't ahve the same ambiance that most people likely go there for. Our server was fantastic- attentive and funny. The food was overpriced and horrible. the best part of our meal was our oysters on a half shell appitizer- which you can't really mess up since they are raw. The pimento chesse was good too (but that was my first time having that, so I don't have anything to compare it to). Don't believe the hype!

It seems like you can't go to Hilton Head without at least one stop at the Salty Dog. It's exactly what you would expect -- a long wait, tons of people, pretty good food [thumbs up for the black bean burger], great for kids. The outdoor seating is nice and they have good beer on tap. The kids love it! And of course it seems that anyone who goes there walks out with at least one Salty Dog t-shirt! Would definitely stop by again.

Salty Dog has the best hush puppies on the island. They are delicious and the service is great. I go in the winter when it isn't too crowded and they have a big bonfire going which adds to the ambiance. It's a fun and friendly place, but the food isn't incredible.

Wreck was great! I read some shoddy reviews prior to my jaunt in, but pish posh. Not one to pass up a specialty, I quickly chose the crabcake sandwich and hushpuppies (I'm a Southern gal and can verify that not many places in northern VA get those bad boys right-sorry LJS). Crabcake was good. Not too much filler, moist on the inside with a little crisp on the out. The kicker, though? The remoulade. Yum! Had a little kick (which I love) and perfect creaminess to pair with the crab. The hushpuppies? I was happy. Slightly sweet, but not overly. Crisp outside and moist inside. Not dried out. Oh, and the strawberry daqs were a-ok, too.

Our food was OK. The service was awful. I never mind the wait time for a good restaurant. They were accurate with informing us of a 40 min. wait. It was 45...We were seated inside and Alex was our waiter. We ordered lemonade, iced tea, water and two non-alcoholic drinks. 30 minutes later the lemonade, tea, and water were brought and Alex said the delay was because the fountain machine was being refilled. Since when is lemonade or tea a "fountain drink"? Our food was brought before the final two drinks arrived. My daughter and I were going to share an appetizer and entre and had told Alex that. We were not given an extra plate . We waited 5 minutes and finally used our napkins for the chips around the blue crab dip and utilized the plate. Alex never came to give us refills or see if we wanted anything else. The tea glass was tipped and all of the drink went over the table. We were given no assistance with the mess and I finally had to ask a bus boy to help with all the ice. David, the manager, went by and I caught his attention. He apologized and it wasn't long until Alex appeared. I didn't want my money back but I did want good service. It was our last day and place to eat on Hilton Head Island. What a disappointment. ALL the other restaurants were great!

I know this is a tourist trap but we have had a great experience every time we have visited. Our first visit was great! There was no wait and we got a perfect table on the top deck looking over the water. This was at prime dining hours too! I think a good tip is to visit this area on a Tuesday while everyone is at Shelter Cove for the fireworks. Of course this tip is only good for the summer months! We had great service and the food was great. It was my then 2 year old sons favorite meal of the trip. The next year we wanted to return! We went on a rainy night and we did wait a while. It was like no one wanted to leave their dry table to leave! But it was fine the managers were trying their best to seat us a quickly as possible. The service we got was great I don't know if they were trying to make up for the wait or what! Again this was one of our favorite meals of the trip. My brother got the island style Ma hi Ma hi and loved it! My husband got a cup of the gumbo to start and thought it was great! I got a grilled chicken sandwich and it was great. We love the area the views and of course the T-shirts! We wear them all the time! They wash great in case you are wondering! This is a must do for us every trip!

The great thing about this place is it's location. Wonderful, peaceful outdoor seating by the water. The service was fine. The food and wine, not so much. We only had dessert and after dinner drinks but the dessert was at best what a home chef would do and the wine selection was ridiculous.

Had lunch with my brother on vacation there. Yummy pulled pork sandwich! I had a Blue Hawaiian drink (on special) and it was very good. Nice setting on the water, prices were not bad, but were not great also, but this is a tourist area so that is to be expected.

Love this place! Great seafood and great service. Love it to eat outside. Fresh fish is what this place is about. Specialty drinks are wonderful. Great views from the deck. A must when you are in Sea Pines!

Sorry, I don't see what the hype is about. The outdoor seating is nice and the atmosphere lively, but the food is severely disappointing. I cannot believe I drove 12 plus hours on vacation for mediocre (at best) food. The service was ssslllooowww, my lemonade was only refilled once, and once again, was on the watery side. [RANT] It's a freaking soda machine people! It's not rocket surgery. Adjust the syrup so that more flows into the cup and it will taste better!! If you don't know how to do it, call the Coke guy and he will adjust it for you for free!!! Why? Because he wants you to keep buying overpriced coke syrup!!!! [/RANT] The only redeeming quality to this meal was the Grouper bites. They were a super tasty appetizer and made me wish I has just ordered two of them for my entree. Next time, if there is one, I'll just get a hot dog from the vendor cart and some ice cream from Hilton Head Ice Cream.

Ended up here on a Thursday night around 5:30 pm because the Salty Dog Cafe had a one and a half hour wait. We were referred to the Wreck by a gaggle of snotty and condescending hostesses at The Salty Dog Cafe. We were seated straight away at The Wreck, which featured Salty Dog Cafe menus. The staff at The Wreck were far more pleasant that the ones we encountered at The Salty Dog Cafe. The service at The Wreck was good but our dinners were very average despite being rather expensive. My recommendation: grab a decent meal somewhere else on the island and then swing by the Salty Dog tourist trap complex for ice cream and a pic with the Salty Dog Jake mascot.

Delicious grilled fish. All the meals we had wee very good. We had wonderful outdoor seating and very good service from all the staff. Our meal was made special by our waitress, Carly, who made sure we got to see the black-tip shark cruising in the inner pier near us. We also appreciated meeting Elcin from Istanbul who was working there for the summer. We got to speak Turkish!

We've been to Hilton Head three times and every time we make an obligatory stop to Sea Pines Plantation. The first time we didn't know any better. The second time, we went on a rainy day even though we now know it's a tourist trap. Our last visit was due to having some first time visitors joining us who wanted to see it. Each time, we've headed over to South Beach to see what the attraction is to the Salty Dog Cafe that makes people wait for hours and buy all those t-shirts. So far, we had tried the Salty Dog Cafe (overrated, expensive for what you get, too crowded, and all around "eh"), Land's End Tavern (nothing too memorable about it one way or another), and had pretty much concluded that the best thing about South Beach was Jake's Pizza and the ice cream shop. We were getting hungry while in Sea Pines and there was no wait at the Wreck of the Salty Dog, so we looked at the menu. One thing that gets me about Hilton Head is how many of the restaurants are about the same: seafood (fried or broiled) or steaks for about $20-30 with some starch and "seasonal vegetables" (funny how summer squash, zucchini, and carrots are always "seasonal") with nothing cheap like a sandwich on the dinner menu, but looking at the menu there were choices starting at $10 and choices of sides that included a side salad, so we tried it out. It turned out to be really good. We got their version of potato skins with shrimp and crab meat, which others liked (I'm not a seafood person) and the hot wings I got were much better than I expected. I went to school in central New York, so I get skeptical about how "hot" they'll be, or whether they will break the cardinal rules of breading them or serving ranch dressing. They broke the latter of the two, but that was quickly remedied. The people with me got the coconut mahi mahi, which they really liked for its crisp coconut coating, pineapple salsa, and portion size. Another got the snow crab legs, which also was a healthy portion, though you really can't screw up snow crab legs unless you overcook them or get them from a bad source. I ordered the ribeye steak and while I was asked if I wanted it seasoned with jerk seasoning or blackened, I passed on both...but when I ordered medium rare, I was told they generally only cook to medium. Typically, I like a steak medium rare at most, and will prefer a really good prime steak closer to rare. So I asked if they were serious (usually, only chain restaurants do this with ground beef because they're afraid of e. coli, don't trust their "chefs" and/or suppliers), and I was assured that they could manage it (it still wasn't that busy). I asked if they were sure, otherwise I'd order the flounder or chicken, as I really don't like overcooked steak or burgers. The waitress was certain they could, but when it came out it was well done. She immediately took it back without question and a manager brought me a new one in less than ten minutes, staying to make sure it was done right. It was, so "crisis" averted. In the end, parts of the steak had a lot of connective tissue and were inedible, but it was a generous cut so I was still full and all it all it was pretty good, as were my salad and mashed potatoes. Coupled with the good customer service, I'm willing to me to give them a mulligan. I would definitely give the Wreck of the Salty Dog a second try, though I should know better than to order steak at a seafood restaurant! It was just that my three companions wanted seafood and I was in a steak mood. That said, I liked I had a variety of sides to choose from other than "seasonal vegetables" and the prices were more in the $15-20, especially when you factored in a 10% early bird special prior to 6:30PM and great views of the water. After dinner when we walked over by the Salty Dog Cafe and saw the tons of people waiting over an hour for average food, we knew we made the right choice.

Well while waiting in line for the salty dog, 1.5 hour wait. We started to walk thru the area and came upon the Wreck. We put in our seating and in about 15 minutes we were called and sat. Service was really good, the food was great, and the view outside was nice as well. We got a lobster dip that was really nice. My wife got the gumbo and it was good as well as the burger I got. The menu and price is the same at the salty dog and the other restraunt (since all 3 are pretty much the same place different name) but it was a good experience.

This is the second time I have dined here. I came back because we wanted to go to South Beach and get t-shirts and ice cream. We had planned on eating elsewhere before we came, but we didn't have time. I would not eat at the other places in South Beach (they are all tourist traps and have crappy food at high prices). We ate here last year and I remember that I wasn't exactly thrilled, but someone in our party said it was "healthier food". Ha..there is nothing healthy on the menu (most everything is fried)..maybe a salad. The she crab soup was ok..but could have come out of a can. The fried shrimp was frozen and so salty. I will say their coleslaw is good. I can't remember what I had last time, but I surely will not forget that we should eat somewhere else before we go to South Beach.

Very enjoyable dinner! This is in Sea Pines (have to pay $5 at the gate, but parking close to the restaurant wasn't a problem - we got there early at 5pm, but when we were leaving around 7:30pm there were still parking spaces available. At 5pm, we walked in and were able to get seated right away if we were willing to sit at a higher table - no problem! It was on the 2nd floor with a great window view. This was the 1st week in August, and my daughter was facing the diners that were eating outdoors. She kept saying that they looked really hot. When it's hot - the indoor tables by the window are great. We were served by a cute bartender doing double duty for a while. He was really good (did I mention he had a really cute smite - looked like Jake Guillenhal - cutie!) Anyway my daughter and I decided to split out meal: Hush puppies - they came in a pretty large basket - they were crispy on the outside and warm on the inside and they are served with butter, and we really enjoyed them. The only other hush puppies I'd had before this was at Golden Corral - these win. Yum! Steamed Crab Legs - really good, enough for 2 people to share with melted butter. Just really good and enjoyable. Au Gratin Potatoes - came with the crab - it was ok. We both just had a few bites, and that was enough. Steamed Veggies - also cam with the crab. I would skip this - substitute ANYTHING for these and you'll be happier. They had to have been just frozen veggies that were dethawed with really no seasoning. Yucky / blah Peach Margharita - I'm not a big drinker but peach sounded yummy to me. I couldn't taste the peach, I have to admit I added a packet of sweet and low and it made it taste much better! Really fun experience - pretty water views / really good food (mostly) / cute waiter-bartender. What more could you ask in life???

This place is decent and the decor is nice, but nothing to write home about. Known as a tourist trap, but I am not sure I know what created The Wreck of the Salty Dog's notoriety. Especially for a tourist destination, the food was fairly good with a number of choices, but nothing really stood out. You certainly could get better value for your money and many other places. We went off season so we were able to be seated right away, but I don't know if we would go again.
